New Max Planck Campus: Starting signal for the second competition phase

Jury nominates up to six designs for further development by the end of the year

July 07, 2025

Over the past few months, 15 teams of architects and engineers have been working intensively to develop their vision for the new Max Planck Campus in Martinsried. The submitted designs from these “General Planner teams” were then carefully reviewed – both procedurally and in terms of content – by the competition supervisor and various expert consultants.

Based on the comprehensive preliminary review report, the specialist and non-specialist judges met on 30 June and 1 July to discuss and evaluate the anonymously submitted designs and models of the 15 General Planner teams. Following these deliberations, the jury selected between four to six designs that best aligned with the project’s goals and requirements.

In the coming months, the selected teams will have the opportunity to refine and develop their concepts further, based on the jury's recommendations. At the end of the second phase of the competition, the revised proposals will be reviewed once again. In a second jury meeting, scheduled for early November, the panel will determine the ranking of the top three most convincing concepts.

Further negotiations with the General Planner teams behind the winning designs will then take place as part of the formal awarding process. The team selected to pan the first construction phase and foundational urban structure for the future development of the new campus is expected to be determined in early 2026.

To ensure an objective evaluation, the entire competition process is anonymous. Neither the representatives of the Max Planck Society nor the jury know which firms are participating in the competition or which ones have advanced to the second round. As a result, the Institutes' employees are eagerly looking forward to seeing the designs for their new campus at the end of the year.
