Max Planck Data Center takes the next step

Planegg municipal building committee gives green light for publication of the procedural documents

December 04, 2025

At its meeting on December 4, 2025, the building committee of the municipality of Planegg decided to publish the procedural documents for the Max Planck Society's Data Center. With this decision, the construction project for the new Data Center on the Science Campus in Martinsried has taken another step forward.

Urban land-use planning

With the help of the urban land-use planning process, the municipality can steer the future development of an area. Various public bodies and the public itself are involved in this legally regulated process. The result is a carefully considered development plan that determines what can be built where and under what conditions.

Over the coming weeks, the public bodies will be able to submit their comments. The plans will be published both in the town hall and on the municipality's website in January so that citizens can also find out more about the plans and comment on them. All comments are then weighed up by various committees and afterwards presented to the building committee for a decision. The documents are then published again - until a qualified urban land-use plan is available.

The Data Center

The new Data Center will provide the necessary computing power for a future-oriented research of many Max Planck Institutes - including the two Institutes on the Campus Martinsried. The building required for this will fit seamlessly into the concept of a sustainable and ecological campus. In consultation with the municipality, the Data Center is now planned for the area of the Institutes' parking deck. Due to this, the adjacent green space will remain and can even be extended. As part of the construction project, a habitat for amphibians and other animal species is also to be created here, to complement the green façade of the building.
