MPIB researcher Thierry Nordmann receives 2025 LEO Foundation Award

Nordmann receives prestigious recognition for advances in proteomics and precision medicine in inflammatory skin disease.

October 02, 2025

The Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry is proud to announce Thierry Nordmann, Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and Senior Physician in the Dermatology department at the Ludwig Maximilian University Hospital Munich (LMU), has been awarded the 2025 LEO Foundation Award – Region EMEA for his outstanding contributions to translational dermatology, precision medicine and proteomics in the field of inflammatory skin disease.

The award, endowed with USD 100,000 for research purposes, was presented at the European Society for Dermatological Research (ESDR) meeting held in Antwerp in September. Dr. Nordmann is honored for pioneering work that links highdimensional proteomics, transcriptomics, and artificial intelligence to generate a molecular atlas of inflammatory skin disease, enabling more precise diagnosis and personalised therapeutic strategies.

The Institute congratulates Dr. Nordmann on this recognition and reaffirms its support for his ambitious research agenda. Managing Director Prof. Elena Conti states: “We are very proud that someone of Thierry Nordmann’s caliber has been part of our community since 2021. His work exemplifies how innovative research as well as clinical insight can drive precision medicine forward in skin disease.”

Being both, a group leader at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and a clinician in dermatology, Thierry Nordmann occupies a unique interface between basic science and patient care. This dual role has been fundamental in shaping his vision of precision medicine in dermatology.

Nordmann comments: “It is an honour to receive this prestigious award. I am delighted that the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and our dermatology colleagues at LMU are recognized together. Since I joined the institute in 2021, our team has been fully committed to translating molecular insights to patients with inflammatory skin diseases.”

About Thierry Nordmann

Dr. med. Dr. phil. nat. Thierry Nordmann grew up in Switzerland and the US, and studied medicine at the Universities of Basel and Zurich. He completed his MD-PhD program at the University Hospital Basel with support from a competitive grant of the Swiss National Science Foundation. He obtained his doctorate in medicine (Dr. med.) in 2015 and his doctorate in natural sciences (Dr. phil. nat.) in 2016. After completing his clinical training as a specialist in dermatology and venereology (2021), he moved to Munich and worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Proteomics and Signal Transduction under the supervision of Professor Matthias Mann. Since 2024, he is also a senior physician in  the Department of at the LMU Hospital.
