The staff of the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Biochemistry in Martinsried mourn the loss of their colleague Prof. Dr. Walter Neupert. The biochemist died on 22 June at the age of 79.

Walter Neupert obtained his doctorate in biochemistry at the LMU in Munich in 1968 and in medicine in 1970. He then worked as a scientific assistant and private lecturer until his habilitation in 1972. In 1977, he decided to join the University of Götting in the Institute of Biochemistry. He followed this call until 1983, when he succeeded Theodor Büchner as head of the Chair of Physiological Chemistry at the Medical Faculty of the Adolf Butenandt Institute of the LMU.

During his time at the Ludwig Maximilian University he was also a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and since 1994 also a corresponding member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences. He became a member of the Leopoldina in 1993 and was awarded the Schleiden Medal in 1999.

From 2008 to 2017, Walter Neupert was a Max Planck Fellow at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry. He was awarded the Ernst Jung Gold Medal and the Bavarian Order of Maximilian for Science and the Arts for his findings on the biology of mitochondria.

"Walter Neupert was an exceptional scientist with a unique flair for cell function," said F.-Ulrich Hartl, Director at the MPI of Biochemistry and a former student of Neupert. "The research community loses an esteemed mentor and colleague," said F.-Ulrich Hartl, Director at the MPI of Biochemistry.
