The Max Planck Institutes in Martinsried during the Corona Pandemic

In February, the management boards of the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and the neighboring Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence began preparing for the rapid spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19).  We implemented many measures to safeguard our employees, guests, and neighbors. In this way, we want to minimize the infection risk and contain the spread of the virus on our campus. The precautionary measures initiated in March remain in effect until further notice.

  • Please be aware that currently no visitors can enter the Institutes.
  • We have cancelled or postponed events on our campus. Please refer to our websites for information about specific events and/or ask your contact person at the Institutes.
  • The institutes' canteen is also open for external guests between 8:00 and 14:00. It offers hot meals for take away between 11:30 and 14:00. Please observe the rules of hygiene. The cafeteria remains closed.
  • Employees of the Institutes work from home whenever possible.
Our employees can find further information on the Institute's intranet and should read their emails.

Many of our scientists are currently concentrating on activities that they can do from their desk at home. These include literature research, data evaluation, working on theoretical questions, and writing publications. Video conferencing and other media tools ensure that collaborations and team meetings continue even in these difficult times.

In addition, our scientists contribute with their expertise to the fight of the coronavirus pandemic. Our researchers initiated work to accelerate and improve diagnosis of coronavirus infections, to better understand how Covid-19 manipulates normal human cellular proteins during infection, and to identify potential novel routes to therapeutics. To achieve these goals, we collaborate with virologists at Munich hospitals and scientists across Germany and worldwide.

To assist the community further, the institutes have assembled a service team. The goal of this team is to match volunteers with local needs and to assist for example with the placement of equipment and qualified employees in diagnostic labs. In addition to their professional contribution, our employees are also privately involved in neighborhood help and various humanitarian organizations.
