1986-1991 Chemistry degree at the University of Pavia (Italy). Diploma supervisor: Martino Bolognesi.
1992-1996 PhD in Protein Crystallography at Imperial College, Faculty of Physical Sciences, London (UK). PhD supervisor: Peter Brick.
1997-1999 Postdoctoral fellow at The Rockefeller University, New York (USA). Postdoc advisor: John Kuriyan.


1999-2007 Group leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Heidelberg (Germany).
Since 2006 Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, Martinsried/Munich (Germany). In Munich since September 2007.
Since 2007 Honorary Professor at the Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich (Germany).
