Since the "early days" of protein chemistry the group puts its main emphasis on chromatography and protein sequencing by the Edman chemistry. 2D-gelelectrophoresis also has been established as powerfull separation technique long before proteomics hits the headlines.

One focus of the group is still in method development and improvement in protein analytics. This covers methods for protein separation by electrophoretic and chromatographic techniques and analytical methods in the field of massspectrometry and protein sequencing.

Protocols  for sample preparation and improved and highly sensitive protein identification methods are  established.

These techniques are applied in many collaborative projects within the institute and with universities and Max-Planck-Institutes throughout Germany.
