The Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry (MPIB) warmly welcomes students of biochemistry, structural biology, biophysics, cell biology, systems biology, and computational biology who are interested in conducting research at the Institute as part of their undergraduate or postgraduate studies. We place a high priority on education and supporting our young scientists. Alongside our fundamental research, we are dedicated to fostering the growth and career development of scientists, ensuring a bright future for the scientific community. The institute is currently home to an impressive 150 doctoral researchers, a testament to its vibrant academic community.

Applications for laboratory internships or theses at the bachelor's or master's level should be submitted directly to the relevant research group. You can explore all of our research topics and the work of our research groups here.

For doctoral studies, we highly recommend applying through our International Max Planck Research School for Molecules of Life (IMPRS-ML).

Please note that Max Planck Institutes do not award academic degrees. Therefore, our students are also enrolled at one of our local partner universities: the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) or the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

PhD Representation
Currently, about 150 graduate students – coming from all over the world – are working at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried. The Graduate Committee represents all IMPRS-ML doctoral students at the MPIB and our partner universities (LMU and TUM). It was founded in 2001 and organises many social activities throughout the year. Their representatives work closely together with the IMPRS Coordination Team and the MPIB PostDoc representatives. more
