Wireless LAN has been installed in the library.
It can be accessed by all members of the MPI of Biochemistry who have an account in the Computing Centre of the MPIB, as well as guests who have a guest account (short term or conference account). Guest accounts can be obtained in the library or at the reception desk of the institute after showing proof of identity (passport or ID card).

After connecting to the mpibWLAN, an authentication procedure is necessary to enable access to the internet (linkPfeilinstructions).


Printing from a notebook via WLAN
The printer can be reached via WLAN under the name "ic-rz-prn2.biochem.mpg.de". Windows clients install the printer by following this linkPfeilguidance (German, PDF).  Mac OS X clients can find and recognise the printer via Appletalk.
After the installation on the laptop the printer can be used in the same way as the printers in the PC pool of the library. Any costs for print-outs must be paid in cash at the information desk of the library.


Directions for members of  the MPI of Neurobiology
Members of the MPIN who want to access the internet via WLAN, need a user account which can be obtained via the EDV department of the MPIN (Mrs. Schüle, Mr. Streif or Mr. Kahl).
If you want to use cable access to the internet (3 access points in the reading room, upper hall, lower hall), then your notebook must be registered via the EDV department of the MPIN.


Study rooms
In each study room there is an access point to the mpibLAN (the internal institute network) for  all computers that have been registered in the Computing Centre of the MPIB (this is also valid for Neurobiology).
Thus, all users of the study rooms have 4 possibilities of accessing the internet:

  • via mpibWLAN with a short term account (valid up to 7 days) from the library
  • via mpibWLAN with a long term guest account of the Inst. of  Biochemistry or Neurobiology -> application via the respective institute or IT contact person
  • via mpibWLAN with a user account (via the Computing Centre of the MPIB, email address <user>@biochem.mpg.de)
  • with a registered computer via mpibLAN (cable connection to institute network)

Excerpt from the Terms of use of the Computing Centre of the MPIB:
When the internet café network is used, IP addresses from the address range of the MPIB are given. The user is bound to behave in such a way that the interests of the MPIB are not violated. Especially actions are to be avoided that inflict damage on the MPIB, or that could damage its reputation.
The user is bound to take appropriate precautions (concealment of account and password) to avoid unauthorised usage.
