Profile
The emphasis of the collections is on biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, protein chemistry, virus research, structure research, neurobiology and neuroimmunology.
We have about 61000 books, periodicals and bound journals, as well as about 115 running print journals and periodicals. The newer books resp. editions and journals are freely accessable in the library. The books are arranged systematically according to their subjects, whereas the journals are arranged alphabetically.
In the course of the forward-looking expansion of the digital library, our library is constantly adding to its range of electronic media. About 20.000 electronic journals and databases have been (consortial and local) licensed. A number of general and specialized CD-ROMs can be used at the computers in the reading room. There are local databases and central information services (e.g. Ovid) available.
Biographical and bibliographical reference works, address books, encylopedias, and dictionaries are in the cabinets in the reading room. (Group Y).
Reprints of the MPI Biochemistry and the MPI Neurobiology are collected in the reprint archive.
We also collect the diploma theses and dissertations (archive 3) of the members of both institutes.
Members of the MPI Biochemistry, the MPI Neurobiology, as well as guests of the campus, can use the library after hours.
During opening hours the library is available for all interested persons. These external visitors must sign in at the information desk.
The whole contents of the library are in the local online catalogue. This includes books, periodicals, journals, as well as the theses of the scientists in the institutes. The catalogue can be reached via the internet. We use the library software ALEPH.
For further information look at our homepage. Here you will also find our address and our staff , who will help you with any questions. Library tours are also offered on a regular basis.
Part of the holdings can be borrowed and the rest are for reference only. The books, periodicals and journals in the reading room, on the upper and lower levels, and in magazine T can be used directly. Older journals and books are in magazine A which is not open to the public. To access books here you need to fill in an order slip.
If books are not available in the library they can be ordered via inter-library lending. Books and especially articles can also be ordered via subito.
We offer you a number of web sites with comprehensive information about our services and how to use them. Please inform yourself.
At the same time some digital services can be used straight from the library homepage.
In the reading room there are PCs for using the internet, the local catalogue and CD-ROM databases. There are 2 PCs in the reading room exclusively for members of the Institute of Neurobiology for direct access to the intranet of their own institute. It is also possible to use private notebooks in the reading room (WLAN).
There are also 2 colour copier, and 3 scanners.
